Staggering number of Brits in the dark about how their home works

62% of Brits have no idea about how their home functions - from heating systems/boilers, radiators, electrics and water pipes, 41% admit they don’t know where their water stopcock is and 38% have no idea how to use it, but it doesn’t stop there:

  • 40% don't know how to re-pressurise the boiler
  • 45% have had arguments with their partner because of home maintenance issues, with 24% calling on their parents when struck by a DIY emergency
  • 35% are clueless when it comes to finding their gas meter
  • 31% are unsure of where their fuse box is
  • 26% don’t even know where the boiler lives

It’s no laughing matter

With the average water leak claim costing around the £4,000 for an escape of water or burst pipe, shockingly 44% of people didn’t know how to fix a leak and 53% not knowing what a leak detector is – we know that prevention is better than cure, so we’re urging your clients to brush up on their own home and DIY knowledge.

We found that 58% of the nation have had to live without hot water for a weekend because their boiler stopped working and our home emergency claims data found that 27% of call outs were due to not getting the boiler serviced within the recommended timescales.

Parents to the rescue

The Mum and Dad home knowledge bank is a popular place for support, as almost a quarter of Brits (24%) admit their parents are the first people they call when they have a DIY crisis, and that increased by 141% for young adults (18-29).

From finding their fuse boxes and resetting the trip switch, bleeding radiators to reading the meters: basic DIY skills are seriously lacking, but 44% of Brits wished they were more practical when it came to fixing problems in the home.

DIY – no thank you

Homeowners have also admitted causing some DIY disasters or making a problem worse when trying to fix something themselves, 44% wished they were more practical when it came to fixing problems in their house, 28% complained that TV home improvement shows make DIY look easy, lulling you into a false sense of security.
